2010 World Slasher Cup Solo Winner is Reigning Bakbakan Champ Sonny Magtibay
by broodcock
Sunday, January 31 2010

Winning the 2,417-entry Bakbakan 10-Stag National Derby is something unimaginable and capturing the solo championship of the historic 240-entry 2010 World Slasher Cup 8-Cock International Derby is a feat cockers can only dream of, but 33-year old Electrical Engineer Sonny Magtibay did the impossible – he won the two titles within a span of only 50 days. And from being a relative unknown, Magtibay is now the most talked-about, not to mention much-envied, cockfighter in the country.

Magtibay’s entry, RM Red Cobra Farm, scored a perfect record of 8 wins out of 8 matches to conquer the biggest and grandest World Slasher Cup in history.

In the opening salvo, Magtibay’s roosters breezed through the 2-cock eliminations, first lording it over Rhemy Medrano’s Karamba Ilonor entry with a Sweater-Kelso fighter, then winning over Eddie Araneta’s by fielding a Sweater – Yellow-legged Hatch ¾-1/4 cross.

In the 2-cock semis, his entry using a 2-time winner Sweater crosses dominated its opponents’ Lahaina Boys – MCF Game Farm of Kali Casco of Hawaii and Thunderbird – II Hatchet of Nene Araneta and Roger Roberts.

In the 4-cock finals last Thursday, Magtibay unleashed a 2-year old Pure Sweater cock against 3-time Slasher champ Peping Ricafort’s PTK Country Road; a 1-time winner Pure Sweater against Jorge Torres’ Lover Boy; and a Sweater-Lemon cock versus another Peping Ricafort entry, PTK Yucatan.

In his championship fight, Magtibay’s Sweater-Juancho Grey cross needed only 8 seconds to dispose of Ricki Reyes’ Rian Octagon Oliver Colors. The championship-sealer rooster hit his opponent in mid-air on the first buckle.

A proud Thunderbird Bexan XP – user, Magtibay thanked his wife Precy for “her full support” and his three boys Reinhold Harry, Michael Dwayne and Sean Heinrich. Team Red Cobra also icludes Ritchie “Enteng” Buatag - handler; Itoy Dumaraos, gaffer; and Eddie Pontero – pointer who is Boy Tanyag’s farm manager, plus his partners Neil Aguirre and Beng Navarro.

Runners-up with 7 wins are: Tin-Tin of Wilson Agbayani; AManong Mahakam GE of Denny and Nino; Alexander of Frank, Greg, and William Berin; FBJ- 2 of Ferdie Buensalida; and Thunderbird - 4- Stingray of Nene Araneta.

Bringing up the rear are RT-JU Riverside of James Uy, Chelly E. and AS with 6 ½ wins, and entries with 6 wins: High Grade of Gov. E. Plaza; Rian Colors Octagon BM of Ricki Reyes; Sagupaan Complexor 3000 of Patrick A.; JJTRC Cherokee of Jesry Palmares and Bill Mcnatt; Deep Impact B.C.A. of Cito Alberto; TMP Farm of Tady Palma; JMP Muntinlupa of Lito Cay; GPC Pik Pak Boom Babatngon of RC, WO, and GC; V-Tex of VG Lacson; 3 Bagay Farmville; Scorpion of Ohana and Chris James; Octagon Jared Camsur-ORC of Ontong F.; LB Candelaria Apr. 10 Winslet-ORC-2 of DL; EM Summit of Atty. Ed Moreno; and CMC Gamefarm of Cesar Calvo.

Known as the “Olympics of cockfighting,” the World Slasher Cup was first held in 1963. It has eventually evolved into a tourist attraction, with foreign visitors flocking to the matches every year to participate in and witness an intrinsic and colorful facet of Filipino culture, the “sabong.”

Sabungero at magmamanok ,'nagsabong' sa Comelec
by broodcock
Sunday, September 20 2009

(Pilipino Star Ngayon) Updated September 20, 2009 12:00 AM

(Gemma Garcia/Ludy Bermudo/Mer Layson)

Partylist pinaglalaruan na lang
(Pilipino Star Ngayon) Updated August 19, 2009 12:00 AM

(Malou Escudero at Doris Franche)

Aboitiz Equity unit bets on gamefowl for profit boost

September 4, 2009, 3:00pm

MANILA (Dow Jones) – Sabin Aboitiz knows close to nothing about cockfighting. Nonetheless, he is making a big bet on the popular Filipino pastime as a future growth driver for Pilmico Foods Corp.

"Margins are higher" in gamefowl feeds, the president and chief executive of Pilmico told Dow Jones Newswires late Thursday, explaining the company's foray into the specialized segment of the P200- billion feeds market.

Pilmico is the flour and animal feeds subsidiary of investment holding firm Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc. (AEV.PH), which also has interests in banking, power, property development and transportation.

Aboitiz said the move into gamefowl feed is aimed at increasing Pilmico's contribution to earnings of Aboitiz Equity, whose investments in power generation and distribution are its main income drivers.

Unlike chickens grown for food, Aboitiz explains that fighting cocks live longer – usually for several years compared with no more than two months for regular poultry – consequently, requiring more and different types of feed.

He said there are an estimated 39 million gamefowl in the Philippines, a number that is still growing as larger, more lucrative cock fights are held.

Aboitiz said Pilmico plans to expand product lines, increase output and improve its distribution network to gain a bigger share of the feed market. It claims a 4% market share of the total domestic feed market.

In the first half, Pilmico contributed 13% to Aboitiz Equity's P3.44 billion net profit, – versus a 10% share last year.

Pilmico has been developing its feed business in recent years and the start of operations last September of its 108,000 metric ton Iligan feedmill helped boost margins and pare freight costs, resulting in a 67% surge in first-half net profit to P385 million.

The feeds business accounted for 58% of Pilmico's first-half profit and 35% of its P5.53 billion revenue. In the year earlier period, the profit and revenue contribution was 1.3% and 28%, respectively.

Pilmico had said that high demand in the Visayas and Mindanao markets had pushed utilization level of the Iligan feedmill to 80% of capacity. The company is now preparing to build a second feedmill that will cost P68 million and that is scheduled for completion by the fourth quarter of 2010.

Pilmico also expects to soon finish a P90-million biogas facility in its swine farm. The facility will convert hog waste into electricity that will meet 80% of the farm's power needs. Pilmico is applying for carbon credits for this project.

BOY MARZO’S SWEATERS BAGS WSC 8-COCK CROWN
by broodcock
Sunday, January 23 2005

Press Release : BOY MARZO’S SWEATERS BAGS WSC 8-COCK CROWN
Reference : Rolando S. Luzong

Boy Marzo finally found his end of the rainbow and yes, the "pot of gold".

With a score of 6.5 points, Marzo’s BM Bulalayaw entry, considered as the darkhorse among the top-rated frontrunners going into the finals, came from behind to bag the championship of the just-concluded 2005 World Slasher Cup 8-Stag International Derby. With 118 entries entered, this year’s WSC is the biggest and also presented the largest American delegation ever.

Bulalayaw means rainbow in Ilocano. Fascinated by the rainbow sicne childhood, Marzo has adopted Bulalayaw as his official derby entry name since the 80s.

Marzo - a satisfied Thunderbird Power Feeds-user particularly Thunderbird Paltinum & Thundebrird Enertone, first won against Binangonan Balbina of Danding Cojuangco and over Spitting Dragon entry during the January 18 2-cock elimination. It went on to defeat PEBR Complexor 3000 Mulawin of Pol Estrellado & Boy Royo in the semis, then drew with Firefly Thunderbird - 13 of Jun Santiago.

Carrying 3.5 points into the finals Marzo lost to Joe Firefly Thunderbird - 12 of Jun Santiago, the proceeded to conquer Mike Romulo's Kalookan Queen needing no more than 15 seconds. In its 7th fight Bulalayaw destroyed Winning Time Jobo of Rudy Salud who has 4 wins and a loss at that time.

In his 8th and final fight in Fight No. 105 (second to the last fight of the finals) Bulalayaw demolished Patrick Antonio's Complexor 3000 Firefly - 14 for the championship.

Marzo fielded his own breeding composed of 7 brothers (2-year old Sweater-Gilmore Crosses) out of broodstocks acquired from Sonny Lagon and Bruce Barnett. The 8th rooster, which was his second fight in the semis, was the father of the 7 brothers.

Sharing the honors with Marzo are partners Joe Walcott & Larry Whitehead of Tenessee with their Joe Firefly Thunderbird – 12 entry.

Press Release : Bruce Barnett To Conduct Free Gamefowl Breeding Clinic
Reference : Rolando S. Luzong

World-renowned gamefowl breeder Bruce Barnett of Blackwater, Jasper, Alabama will conduct a free clinic on gamefowl breeding, conditioning etc. on Friday starting at 1:00 p.m. at the new Gateway Theater beside Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

Respected and admired by cockfighters and rooster-raisers everywhere because of his Sweater lines of fightingcocks, Barnett is currently in the Philippines competing in the ongoing World Slasher Cup International 8-Cock Derby, alongside his partner Sonny Lagon (Blue Blade) who popularized, to the hilt, the Sweaters locally.

Sponsored by Thunderbird Power Feeds and Univet, Barnett will be talking about his Sweaters – its origin and composition and all aspects of gamefowl breeding, training and conditioning.

Thunderbird Marketing Director Ed Mapanao and Product Manager Dante Nacar expressed their gratitude to Sonny & Bruce “for their generosity to share their time and secrets”.

Half of the 4-hour program will be an open forum wherein the participants may finally ask their questions about the Sweaters personally to Bruce.

After the clinic, participants and guests will be given time to have their pictures taken with Barnett and Lagon.

Those who would like to attend must make seat reservations at tel. 6388332; 6318501 loc. 7737 or 8850. During the clinic participants are required to bring five empty packs of any Thunderbird products or a combination thereof.

DONALD IS HERE
by broodcock
Saturday, January 15 2005

Peoples Tonight c/o Ed Andaya
CARREO by Rolando S. Luzong

DONALD IS HERE

Sometime around July last year, I wrote about my friend Donald Walters, a gamefowl breeder in Oklahoma, who has decided to move back to the Philippines after cockfighting has been outlawed in Okie country last year.
Well, true to his word that he’ll be here by January, he’s here now. When we came face to face again after about six years, Donald hugged me like a long lost brother.
“What is life if you can’t do what you want to do. I want to breed and fight roosters. If my government won’t allow me to do it in America, I’ll do it here”, Donald told me. He went on to say that the Philippines is a cockers’ paradise.
Donald is married to Melissa, a native of Dumaguete City. Despite having a good paying job in the U.S., Melissa gave in to her husband’s wish knowing that it will make him happy.
“I’m lucky to have Melissa”, Donald proudly told me.
Within three weeks, a friend in Oklahoma will be shipping Donald’s gamebirds into the country and while waiting for them, Walters will be building a chicken house and preparing his new breeding farm in Dumaguete.

IT’S WORLD SLASHER WEEK

It’s two days to go before the 2005 World Slasher Cup and all indications point to a record-breaking event that may just make me a credible seer. My fearless forecast is that the WSC-2005 will surpass the 108 entries that saw action last year. I predicted that there will be no less than 120 and may even reach 140.
As of our last inquiry three days ago, there are already 98 cockhouse reservations received by the Big Dome. Several participants have tow or more entries such as 2004 runner-up finisher Sonny Lagon and 6-pointer Boy Marzo of Bulalayaw Game Farm.
This year’s WSC will also present the biggest number of American rooster-raisers and cockfighters ever. Already here or due to arrive today or tomorrow are Roger Roberts of Georgia; Ray Alexander of Alabama, C.D. Morse of Texas, Joe Walcock, Larry Whitehead, Chuck Berry (Texas), Bobby Fairchild of Okalahoma who will be fighting alongside Mayor Jezry Palmares of Passi City, Iloilo; Jason Campbell, Jimmy Cody, Joe Sanford, Johny Moore of Tennesse, Jorge Goitia of California, Johnny Moore, Henry Navarro alos of California, Brad Pagette, Kelly Green, Sedfrey Linsangan from Guam, Ric de Guzman & Rene Medina from San Francisco, Jerry Douglas of the famous Black Bonanza Farm, Jerry Douglas, Fil-Am George Torres, Joseph Walcott and the popular Bruce Barnett of Blackwater Farm in Jasper, Alabama.

WHY THUNDERBIRD?

Many have asked me why is it that Thunderbird Power Feeds has always been tap as the exclusive sponsor of the World Slasher Cup. Well, for one, the originator and still very much the main host of WSC is Araneta Center’s king Jorge “Nene” Araneta who’s derby entry name has always been Thunderbird.
That may only be one of the reasons though.
As an exclusive sponsor of what is termed as the “Olympics of Cockfighting”, Thunderbird Power Feeds have always outdone itself in terms of marketing and promotional support spending more than a million pesos every WSC time.

ABU-SHIO ULUTAN STAKES A HOUSE & LOT

Super llamadors Abu and Shio are inviting everyone to their promotion on February 17, 18 & 19, which will go down in history as the richest ulutan ever with a guaranteed prize of P1,300,000 worth of cash and other prizes. These includes a new house & lot that is said to cost no less than P900,000.
The winners will be based on the combined winning time of an entry’s two winning roosters.
P100,000 is up for grabs for the second placer; P50,000 for the 3rd placer; P35,000 for the 4th at P30,000 for the 5th.
The sixth up to the tenth placer gets P5,000 each, while, the one that would win twice with the longest time takes home P0,000.
Entry fee is P3,300, while, minum is P2,200.

MASBATE, here I come…

By the time you are reading this I’ll be breathing fresh air from the sea and feasting on seafoods in the island of Masbate which for me is home.

Although, I was born in Marikina, I studied and finished high school in the Masbate National Comprehensive High School in 1975, the went back to Manila. Ever since, going back to Masbate is something for me to celebrate.

Like their famous rodeo which attracts both foreign and local visitors every year, the annual cocking event is aimed to promote Masbate as an alternative tourist destination.
Ably assisting the good Governor in the 2-day tussle is his provincemate, World Slasher Champ Rey Briones of the famous RB Islander entry.

YEARS OF THE ROOSTER

YEARS OF THE ROOSTER

It seems that the hot topic today is 2005 being a Year of the Rooster. What most of you might not be aware of is that for so long we have been living in the Years of the Rooster.
While cockfighting and gamefowl lovers in America and elsewhere continuously face strong opposition, cockfighting and gamefowl breeding in the Philippines have enjoyed a steady climb.
Our government may not know it, but cockfighting has been one of the biggest balikbayan attractions the Philippines uniquely have. Filipino cockers based abroad comes home every year to compete in their favorite derby or just to watch the World Slasher Cup.
Fil-Canadian Ramon Belonio arrives here early before Christmas to have enough time to condition his roosters to fight in Iloilo’s Annual Candelaria derby that is held in the first week of February.
Feng-shui experts are one in saying that the Year of the Wooden Rooster is not a good one, however, my own crystal ball says otherwise with regards to cockfighting and the gamefowl industry in the country.
I see more new breeders, thousands of fresh cockers, increase in cocking activities, more record-breaking derby promotions both in terms of prizes and attendance; bullish market, improvements in cockpit facilities and tougher competitions.
My tarot cards also says that while a number of big bettors may follow those who bit the dust this year, nee colorful personalities will emerge. Likewise, more politicians will be jumping into the cocking pool, inspired by the successes of Representatives Claude Bautista, Ronnie Puno and Gerry Boy Espina.

KARMA IS VERY STRONG IN COCKFIGHTING

One thing I’ve really noticed in cockfighting is that karma here is very much alive. Both good karma and bad karma are so evident
For one, gambling money in cockfighting that came from illegal sources don’t win. There was a drug lord, a hired killer (we were told), a known gambling lord, a smuggler, a loan shard, a buyer of stolen cocks and also a swindler. Some have lost everything, some are now in jail and some are still in the cockpits, but are losing heavily.
The cheaters or maniniope in the pasts have suffered tremendously. Some are now not only without wealth, but also health.
So, if you’re thinking of fast bucks in sabong by cheating, think again.
DENNIS ROLDAN INVITES YOU

My good friend Pareng Dennis Roldan (our local Richard Gere) is in inviting you all to his “Bakbakan sa Banlog 5-Cock Derby” at the Palauig Sports Center in Palauig, Zambales on January 25th.
A native of Zambales himself, Dennis has been a cocker since his teenage years and has continued breeding gamefowls and fighting roosters despite his busy movie and television career. Even his Congress days when he was a House Representative of Quezon City.
A P500,000 guaranteed cash prize is up for grabs in the one-day event for an entry fee of P11,000.
Helping Dennis in this promotion are Bong Aragon, Arce Monsalud, Tom Apatan, Ronald Vibar and Raul Trinidad.
Submission of weights is on the 24th from 8:00 a.m. to twelve midnight only.
